Calculation details & precision
Area conversions use square metres as the base unit. Length factors are squared: 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m². A hectare is 10,000 m²; an international acre is 4,046.8564224 m². Historical US survey-foot definitions are not used.
Automatic displays up to 12 significant digits. Choose 2, 4 or 6 decimal places in Precision for a shorter result. Displayed results are rounded; very large or small values use scientific notation.
Common questions
How many square feet are in a square metre?
One square metre is approximately 10.7639104167 square feet. A square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m².
How do hectares and acres compare?
One hectare is exactly 10,000 m², approximately 2.47105381467 international acres. One acre is exactly 4,046.8564224 m².
Why is the area factor different from the length factor?
Area has two dimensions. Since 1 m equals 100 cm, 1 m² equals 100 × 100 = 10,000 cm². To find the area of a rectangle, multiply its length by its width before converting.
