What an aspect ratio tells you
An aspect ratio is the proportion between width and height, written as two numbers such as 16:9. To simplify it, divide both sizes by their greatest common divisor, so 1920 by 1080 becomes 16:9. To resize without stretching, keep the ratio and change one side: the other follows from it.
