Barcode checker●
Enter a barcode number. See its type, check digit and country prefix. Draw the bars.
The result updates as you type. Nothing is looked up online, so your numbers stay private.
The prefix shows which GS1 office issued the number, which is usually where the company registered, not always where the product was made. Product names and prices need an online database, which this tool does not use.
Result
The number is checked on your device with a built-in table of GS1 prefixes. No product database is contacted and nothing is sent or stored.
What the numbers mean.
Most product barcodes are EAN-13 or UPC-A. The first three digits are a GS1 prefix that identifies the national office which issued the company's number. The next digits identify the company and the product, and the last digit is a check digit calculated from all the others, so a mistyped or misread code can be caught. Books use the prefixes 978 and 979, and magazines use 977.

Does the country in a barcode show where a product was made?
Not necessarily. The prefix shows which GS1 member organisation issued the number, which is usually where the brand registered. A product can be made in one country and carry the prefix of another.
How is the check digit calculated?
Weight the digits from the right, starting after the check digit, alternately by 3 and 1, add them up and take the amount needed to reach the next multiple of 10. This tool does it for you and shows the expected digit when yours does not match.
Can this tool tell me the product name or price?
No. Names, prices and photos live in online databases. This checker works entirely in your browser, so it can only read what is inside the number itself.
What is the difference between UPC-A and EAN-13?
UPC-A has 12 digits and is used mainly in the United States and Canada. EAN-13 has 13 digits. A UPC-A is the same as an EAN-13 with a leading 0, so scanners everywhere read both.
