BMI is a rough screening number. It does not measure body fat, muscle, bone or where weight is carried, and it is not a diagnosis.

How BMI is calculated
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. A person who is 1.75 m tall and weighs 70 kg has a BMI of 70 / (1.75 x 1.75) = 22.9. In pounds and inches the formula is 703 x weight / height squared. The WHO groups adult results into underweight (below 18.5), healthy (18.5 to 24.9), overweight (25 to 29.9) and obesity (30 and above). BMI is a quick screening tool for populations. For one person, a doctor also looks at waist size, body composition, fitness, age and health history.
Kilograms to pounds →Common questions
What is a healthy BMI?
For adults the WHO gives 18.5 to 24.9 as the healthy range. The calculator also shows the weight range that matches this for your height.
Is BMI accurate?
It is a simple screening number. It cannot tell muscle from fat, so very muscular people can score high, and older adults can score in the healthy range with little muscle. Waist size and a check-up give a fuller picture.
Does BMI work for children?
Not with adult ranges. Children and teenagers are compared with growth charts for their age and sex, which a doctor or nurse can use.
