What is the difference between percentage change and percentage points?
Going from 20% to 25% is an increase of 5 percentage points. Relative to the original 20%, that is a 25% increase. This calculator’s change mode returns relative percentage change, not percentage points.
Why can’t I calculate change from zero?
Percentage change divides by the original value. With an original value of zero, that division is undefined. This mode also excludes negative baselines because their interpretation can be misleading.
Can a percentage be above 100 or below zero?
Yes. For example, 150% of 20 is 30. The percentage-of and share modes allow signed values. Increase and Decrease accept nonnegative percentages; select the mode to choose the direction.
Does a 20% decrease reverse a 20% increase?
No. Starting at 100, a 20% increase gives 120. Decreasing 120 by 20% gives 96. Reversing a percentage change depends on the new base.
How precise are the calculations?
The arithmetic uses exact fractions. The display shows up to 14 significant digits, marking rounded decimals with ≈. Open Exact value for the full unrounded fraction. Inputs accept up to 128 characters.
