EVERYDAY MATH, MADE SIMPLE.

Fahrenheit to Celsius●

Degrees Fahrenheit in. Degrees Celsius out. Convert weather, cooking and body temperature.

Temperature

Convert a temperature reading. Values below absolute zero are rejected.

Use a decimal point, for example 2.54. Scientific notation works too: 1e3.

RESULT
72 °F =
22.2222222222 °C
°F = °C × 9/5 + 32 · K = °C + 273.15 · °R = K × 9/5

Try a value

Pick an example to start

The formula

°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9

Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature, then multiply by 5/9. The scales meet at −40, where −40 °F equals −40 °C.

A worked example

For 72 °F, subtract 32 to get 40, then multiply by 5/9. The result is approximately 22.222222 °C.

(72 − 32) × 5/9 ≈ 22.222222 °C

GOOD TO KNOW

For weather, ovens and body temperature.

Use this conversion for US weather forecasts, oven temperatures and thermometers marked in Fahrenheit. Water freezes at 32 °F (0 °C) and boils at 212 °F (100 °C) at standard pressure. This page converts a temperature on the scale. To convert a difference between two temperatures, switch to Difference in the mode control, because a change of 1 °F is a change of about 0.556 °C.

Calculation details & precision

Temperature readings include scale offsets: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, K = °C + 273.15, and °R = K × 9/5. Rankine is an absolute scale with Fahrenheit-sized degrees. Readings below absolute zero are rejected.

Automatic displays up to 12 significant digits. Choose 2, 4 or 6 decimal places in Precision for a shorter result. Displayed results are rounded; very large or small values use scientific notation.

Common questions

What is the formula for Fahrenheit to Celsius?

Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature and multiply by 5/9. For example, 68 °F is (68 − 32) × 5/9 = 20 °C.

What is a quick way to estimate Celsius from Fahrenheit?

Subtract 30 and halve the result. For 70 °F that gives 20 °C, close to the exact 21.1 °C. The estimate drifts further from the exact value at high and low temperatures.

What is normal body temperature in Celsius?

98.6 °F is 37 °C. A temperature of 100.4 °F, or 38 °C, is commonly treated as a fever.
