How the 50/30/20 rule works

The 50/30/20 rule splits your income after tax into three parts: about half for needs, thirty percent for wants and twenty percent for savings and paying off debt. It is a starting point, not a law. If rent is high, needs may take more and wants less, and that is fine as long as you keep paying yourself first. Use the My budget tab to list what you really spend, give each item a group, and see how your own split compares with the targets and how much is left. You can change the percentages on the first tab and they carry over as targets.

Common questions

What is the 50/30/20 rule?

Spend 50% of your income after tax on needs, 30% on wants and put 20% towards savings and debt repayment.

What counts as a need?

Things you must pay: housing, utilities, groceries, transport to work, insurance and minimum debt payments.

What if my needs are more than 50%?

That is common in expensive cities. Keep the savings share as high as you can and cut wants first. The percentages on the first tab are editable.

Should I use income before or after tax?

After tax, because that is the money you can actually spend.

Where does debt repayment go?

Minimum payments are needs. Extra payments beyond the minimum belong in savings and debt. Pick the group that fits how you see it.

Is my budget stored?

No. The numbers stay in your browser tab and are never sent or saved.
