How hourly pay becomes a salary

A yearly salary is the hourly rate times the hours you work each week times the weeks you work each year. At 25 an hour for 40 hours and 52 weeks that is 25 x 40 x 52 = 52,000 a year, or about 4,333 a month. Going the other way, divide the yearly pay by the hours worked in the year. If you take unpaid weeks, enter fewer weeks so the result is not too high. Paid holidays and paid leave count as worked weeks. Monthly pay is the yearly amount divided by 12, which is why it is not the same as four weekly payments. All figures are before tax and do not include bonuses or overtime.

Common questions

How do I convert an hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by the hours worked per week and by the weeks worked per year. At 20 an hour for 40 hours and 52 weeks, that is 41,600 a year.

How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the yearly salary by the hours you work in a year, which is hours per week times weeks per year. A 52,000 salary at 40 hours and 52 weeks is 25 an hour.

Why is a month not exactly four weeks?

A year has 52 weeks, which is 4.33 weeks a month. Monthly pay here is the yearly pay divided by 12.

How do I count unpaid time off?

Enter fewer weeks worked per year. If you take two unpaid weeks, use 50. Paid holidays and paid leave still count as worked weeks.

Is this before or after tax?

Before tax. The calculator does not take income tax, social contributions or bonuses into account.

Is my pay stored?

No. The numbers stay in your browser tab and are never sent or saved.
