Hashes

Text and files are hashed on your device and are never uploaded.

What a hash is for

A hash is a short fingerprint of data. The same input always gives the same hash, and a tiny change gives a completely different one. Use SHA-256 or SHA-512 to verify downloads. MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for checksums but are broken for security, so do not use them to protect passwords or signatures.

Common questions

Which hash should I use?

SHA-256 for most things. MD5 and SHA-1 are only suitable for spotting accidental changes, not for security.

Can a hash be reversed?

No. Hashing is one way. Short or common inputs can be guessed, which is why passwords need slow, salted hashing instead.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is read and hashed in your browser and never leaves your device.

Why does my hash differ from another tool?

Usually a trailing newline or different line endings in the text. Hash the file itself to avoid this.
