How inflation changes what money buys

Inflation is the yearly rise in prices. If prices rise by a steady rate r each year, something that costs P today costs P x (1 + r)^n after n years. At 3% a year, 100 becomes about 134 in 10 years. Buying power runs the other way: money you will receive later is worth its amount divided by (1 + r)^n in today's terms, so 1,000 in 10 years at 3% buys what about 744 buys now. To find the average rate between two prices, take the ratio of the prices, raise it to the power of one over the number of years and subtract one. Real inflation changes from year to year, so these figures are estimates built on the average rate you choose.

Common questions

How do I calculate the future cost of something?

Multiply today's price by (1 + the yearly inflation rate) once for every year. At 3% for 10 years the factor is 1.34, so 100 becomes about 134.

What does buying power mean?

It is what an amount of money will really buy, measured in today's prices. Divide the amount by (1 + the rate) for every year that passes.

How do I find the average inflation rate between two prices?

Divide the later price by the earlier one, take the root for the number of years and subtract one. The Average rate tab does this for you.

Which inflation rate should I use?

Use the average yearly inflation for your country over a period similar to yours, or a cautious planning figure such as 2 to 3 percent. Official statistics offices publish the real figures.

Does this use official inflation data?

No. It uses only the rate you type, so it works for any currency and any period, but it cannot look up past inflation.
