Tip maths in two steps

Multiply the bill by the tip rate to get the tip, then add it to the bill. An 18% tip on 86.50 is 86.50 x 0.18 = 15.57, for a total of 102.07. To split the bill, divide the total by the number of people. Rounding up to a whole amount per person makes paying simple but raises the tip slightly. Tipping customs differ by country and service, so the right rate depends on where you are.

Common questions

How much should I tip?

In the United States 15 to 20 percent is common in restaurants. In many other countries a service charge is already included or a small round-up is enough. Check local custom.

Should I tip on the bill before or after tax?

Many people tip on the pre-tax amount, others on the total. Enter whichever amount you prefer as the bill.

How do I split the bill evenly?

Set the number of people. The result shows the total and the amount per person including the tip.

Why round up per person?

It gives each person a clean amount to pay. The tool shows the effective tip percentage after rounding.
