How structured data and meta tags help

Structured data is a small block of JSON-LD that tells search engines exactly what a page is about. A FAQ block lists questions and answers, a Product block describes the price and stock, an Article block names the author and date, and a Local Business block gives the address and phone number. Search engines may use it for richer results, but it is never a promise. Meta tags are the lines in the head of a page that set the title, the description, the preferred canonical address and the rules for indexing. Open Graph and Twitter card tags control how a link looks when it is shared. Hreflang tags tell search engines which language version to show to which visitor. Only mark up what people can see on the page. Everything here is built in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Common questions

What is JSON-LD?

JSON-LD is a way to describe a page in a block of code that search engines read. It does not change how the page looks to visitors.

Where do I paste the code?

Paste a JSON-LD block anywhere in the head or body of the page. Paste meta tags inside the head.

Will schema markup guarantee rich results?

No. Search engines decide when to show rich results. Valid, accurate markup that matches the visible page makes it possible.

How long should a title and description be?

Aim for a title under 60 characters and a description under 160 characters so they are less likely to be cut off.

What is a canonical URL?

It is the preferred address of a page. It helps search engines pick one version when the same content is reachable at several links.

When do I need hreflang?

Use it when you have the same page in several languages or regions. Each version should list all versions, including itself.
