Text Compare●

Two versions. See exactly what changed.

Space matching treats each horizontal spacing run as one space. A space versus no space and line breaks still count as differences.

The differences, in context.

Up to date

Add text to either field to start a comparison.

RemovedAddedUnchanged

Whitespace-only changes use · for spaces, ⇥ for tabs and ↵ for line breaks. These marks are for display only; Copy returns the original text.

Both texts stay in this tab. They are processed locally, not uploaded or saved. My workspace saves only a link to the tool.

A change is easier to judge in context.

Original text is shown on the left, revised text on the right. Deletions and additions have both colour and underline or strike-through styling. A replacement appears as a deletion plus an addition; moved text may also appear as removal and insertion.

Common questions

What is the difference between Words and Lines?

Words mode compares word fragments, punctuation and whitespace, using browser word segmentation where available. Lines mode compares each complete line, including its final line break. A replaced word or line is counted once as removed and once as added.

What does Ignore extra spaces do?

Runs of horizontal spaces, tabs and the supported non-breaking spaces compare as one space. It does not remove spacing altogether: “a b” is still different from “ab”. Line breaks and whether a spacing run exists still matter. Original spacing remains visible in both views.

Does Ignore letter case change either text?

No. Matching uses Unicode lowercase forms without language-specific rules, while both inputs and results retain their own spelling. For language-specific changes, use Case Converter first.

Why do line-ending styles compare as equal?

CRLF and CR line endings are normalised to LF for comparison. This avoids marking Windows and Unix line-ending styles as textual edits. A missing final newline still counts as a difference.

How large a comparison is supported?

Each input accepts up to 100,000 UTF-16 units and 40,000 comparison fragments or lines. For large edits, the tool may show the changed middle as replacement blocks and displays a notice. Local worker processing keeps comparison work away from the page where available.

Can I undo Clear or Swap?

Yes. Clear both and Swap texts offer one-step Undo of both inputs. Editing either field or loading an example discards Undo. Comparison options only change the view. Reloading resets the texts.
